The sculpture titled, "Courage and Compassion for 100 years", is composed of two firefighters, standing on a Maltese Cross. The sculpture depicts a moment in time for both men when the fight is over, their coats loosened, and gloves are removed. This moment of reflection is separated by a hundred years; the firefighter from 1907 is considering the future, the 2007 firefighter, the past. This aspect brings the sculpture full circle.
The firefighter from 1907 is in the foreground. He is in a compassionate stance, getting to his feet, at the level height for public viewing. He carries a speaking trumpet in his hand. Here, it symbolizes what brought firefighters to their profession, in essence, their "calling".
The 2007 firefighter is drawn to his full height, commanding attention. He draws from the experience of firefighters of 100 years before. I feature the axe and pike, instrumental to the profession for over 100 years.
The Maltese Cross upon which the firefighters stand is a symbol of Protection. It means that the firefighter who wears this cross is willing to lay down his or her life for you.
The four arms of the cross represent Faith, Justice, Temperance, and Fortitude. The eight points represent: Live In Truth, Have Faith, Repent Of Sins, Give Proof Of Humility, Love Justice, Be Merciful, Be Sincere And Whole-hearted and finally Endure Persecution.
